Hi Peter, I enjoyed your columns in the Times and am looking forward to your substack posts.
My thought for a post. Tell us more about Substack the company. The number of people I follow has exploded in recent weeks. The Substack company must be doing very well. Do you know how owns it, how much money they make, etc.?
Hi Peter - I’m writing to share a direct and incredibly positive result in my life from one of your NYT columns - the one about weak ties and sending holiday cards.
That column prompted me to for the very first time to send one of those photo holiday cards with brief highlights reel text. These always felt very impersonal and a bit performative to me, but the case you made about the value of weak ties and maintaining connection overcame my hesitancy.
As a result of sending cards last year I have resumed somewhat regular contact with longtime friends. Most surprising, and much to my delight, I’ve really gotten to know one of my cousins for the first time. All of this a source of joy and connection.
Thank you for that column and your other musings. I look forward to reading your work here!
I enjoyed your NYT column enormously. Keep going along that road.
Incidentally I abandoned The Times about the time you left. I couldn’t stand any more of the mere reporting of what people said, with no context or regard for facts.
Nor could I endure the sly insertion near the end of long articles of the context and facts which wholly rebutted the headline and preceding text.
One thing that you might consider is cross posting with another substacker that operates in the same, or an adjacent, topic space. Can be a standalone piece, a video interview or back and forth (with or without an accompanying summary or transcript), or any combination that strikes your fancy. Allows you to explore different topic areas without feeling like a high wire act that doesn’t use a net. You could also consider a friendly “point/counterpoint” (of course without the SNL “Jane, you ignorant slut”approach).
Very happy to greet your resurrection! Thank you so very much for letting us all know. Follow the. First Rue of Expository Writing: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW BEST.

I am interested in the intersection of investment and the economy. Glad to see you're back.

Welcome to Substack, the land of free speech. Regarding the NYT, did you jump or were you pushed?
